Layers of the Invisible

A surface never tells the whole story.

Caudal, Epifanía y Savia, de Ana López Berridy, sobre un muro encalado

Much of what shapes us remains beyond sight.

Beneath a painting lie other paintings. Beneath skin lie scars. Beneath an identity lie earlier identities. Beneath a decision lie memories, losses, lessons and desires.

The works in this series operate on that border between the visible and the hidden. They are built through successive layers of paint, impasto and incisions. Some areas disappear. Others survive. Certain forms seem to emerge from a depth that is hard to place.

Each layer alters the one before, but never erases it completely.

What emerges

In every work, something breaks through the layers.

A circle, a crack, a current, a light. The series repeats one gesture: a central presence making its way through matter. Palette-knife impasto, incisions and gold do not decorate the surface; they mark the place where the hidden begins to become visible.

The golden circle

A threshold. A presence. An instant of light. That which we do not yet know.

It has no single meaning. It leaves room for viewers to project their own experience.

Return to the Earth

What remains when the layers are lifted away: earth, mineral, origin.

After Layers of the Invisible, painting begins to leave the purely pictorial surface behind. Clay, lime, marble dust, sand and mineral pigments arrive: materials with weight, memory and a time of their own.

Matter no longer represents something. It is part of the meaning. Surfaces that crack, react and keep the trace of their own making, like a Mediterranean wall that has aged under the sun.

After years surrounded by perfect surfaces, screens and filtered images, it is a deliberate search for the elemental. The crack is no longer a flaw: it is information. The artist begins something; the matter responds.
