About

A journey there and back

Retrato de Ana López Berridy junto a una superficie pintada

Art was there from the beginning.

Born in Dortmund and bound from the start to Spain and the Mediterranean, Ana López Berridy grew up between different places, languages and sensibilities. Spanish and German are both her native languages; her way of seeing was shaped between Central European rigour and Mediterranean light, matter and ways of living.

She studied Fine Arts at the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche and continued her training at the Kunstuniversität Linz in Austria. Then came other paths: museums, galleries, collections, art teaching. Work, structure, responsibilities, a life increasingly full of stimuli.

But painting remained. And in recent years the need to return to it became something deeper than resuming a profession: it was a way of returning to herself.

It is not about going back to where she stood twenty years ago. It is about discovering what is left after everything that has been lived. Her current work grows from there: a search for what remains when the outer layers fall away.

It is not only about painting. It is about excavating.

Artist statement

What remains of us beneath all the layers we gather over time?

My work grows out of that recurring question.

I treat painting as an archaeological surface. I build, cover, remove, erode and build again. Some forms disappear entirely; others remain barely visible beneath new layers. I am interested in that border between presence and absence.

In my recent work I incorporate pigments, clays, marble dust and mineral materials. I look for surfaces that are not entirely obedient, that can crack, react and keep the traces of their own transformation.

Nature appears as a counterpoint: flowers, branches and organic forms emerge and disappear between mineral surfaces.

I do not try to represent the passing of time. I try to place it inside the work. Each piece holds its own memory. Like people do.

Manifesto

I do not want perfect surfaces.
I want surfaces that have lived.

I want a painting to keep what we no longer see. One layer beneath another. A mark. A crack. A form that almost disappears.

I work with paint, earth, pigments and minerals because we are made of the same materials.

I am interested in what changes.
And in what, despite changing, remains.

I paint from that place. Between what already exists and what we do not yet know.

Because there is a place between the last layer and the next brushstroke where the unknown lives.
That is where the future begins.
